According to a fact sheet developed by the Alzheimer’s Association in 2013, 83,494 Americans died as a result of Alzheimer’s disease in 2010. These staggering numbers reveal that in the United States, Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading overall cause of and the 5th for people over 65. The facts also reveal that 61% of 70-year-olds with Alzheimer’s die within ten years, compared to only 30% of 70-year-olds who do not suffer from Alzheimer’s. What makes these numbers especially troubling is that we still have no way to prevent, slow down or cure Alzheimer’s disease and as a result one third of all seniors will die with Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia.
